Our History
In 1893, in response to the prayers of Canadian Margaret Gowan, three men set off by ship for Nigeria. Their goal was to reach the estimated three million people in an expansive swath of Africa that was then known as The Soudan. They named themselves the Soudan Interior Mission, now known simply as SIM.
SIM Nigeria continues the work of founders Walter Gowan, Thomas Kent and Roland Bingham here in Nigeria, SIM’s first mission field. Although SIM outgrew its original name, it has never outgrown its mission. Today, SIM continues to focus on making disciples of Jesus Christ where He is least known, both here in Nigeria as well as in more than 70 countries across six continents.
SIM Nigeria
SIM Nigeria is a receiving arm of SIM International, working hand-in-hand with the Nigerian church and other partners to bring good news to hard places in Nigeria. If you are potentially interested in serving with SIM, we’d be glad to talk with you. Contact Us and your enquiry will be directed to the SIM sending office closest to you.
Our Vision and Purpose
Convinced that no one should live and die without hearing God’s good news, we believe that He has called us to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ in communities where He is least known.
Therefore, compelled by God’s great love and empowered by the Holy Spirit:
- We cross barriers to proclaim the crucified and risen Christ, expressing His love and compassion among those who live and die without Him.
- We make disciples who will trust and obey Jesus, and become part of Christ-centred churches.
- We work together with churches to fulfil God’s mission across cultures locally and globally.
- We facilitate that participation in cross-cultural ministry of those whom God is calling.
