Founded by SIM in 1959, Evangel is now under the auspices of the Evangelical Churches Winning All (ECWA).  Its core medical services include surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology. Over the past decade several new specialized areas have been added:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Ear, nose, and throat surgery
  • Dentistry
  • Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) surgery
  • HIV care including antiretroviral treatment program

The shortage of qualified African doctors is acute. Besides providing high quality medical care, Evangel is also active in medical education, providing several types of training.  They are accredited as a university teaching hospital under Bingham University, and plan to have a full program of teaching medical students. Other areas of medical education include:

  • General and specialty rotations for Nigerian doctors from other sites
  • “Rotations abroad” for medical students and residents from other countries
  • Training site for the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS)
  • Our education programs emphasize not only medical excellence but whole-person care, an ethos of compassion, and Christian discipleship. The specialty areas listed above make our training programs even more attractive.

Burn Garments

The Healing Touch Pressure Garment Clinic was created to help in the healing process of burn victims by providing custom made garments that would aid in the prevention or reduction of burn scars.

The Healing Touch Clinic was established in 2012 by Gay Lynn McCrady, SIM missionary, working together with Iyabo Dung, local Nigerian seamstress. The inspiration for the clinic came after seeing so many patients left scarred and disfigured after suffering burn injuries.  While a patient might survive the actual burn and hospitalization, there is a long process of wound healing that requires preventative attention to avoid debilitating problems. The clinic’s goal is to help burn victims achieve the best healing possible through range of motion exercises, wearing of pressure garments, and education in wound healing.

The clinic also provides seminars in fire safety and first aid for the burn patient to schools, churches, and community groups.  These seminars help educate adults and children in an effort to help reduce fires and the incidents of burn injuries.  The clinic seeks to be a witness to the patients that enters its doors, for not just their physical healing, but their spiritual healing as well.   The clinic is located in Jos and serves the needs of patients in the surrounding middle belt area of Nigeria.  Plans are to open another clinic in Northern Nigeria to serve the needs of the people in that area. Their facilities, trained staff, diagnostic facilities and well equipped surgery enables them to provide quality medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders and diseases for thousands of people, saving their sight and transforming their lives. Recognising the need for medical treatment beyond eye care, they also host a maternity clinic.  In a country where the death of mothers and babies in childbirth is common, this clinic has saved hundreds of lives.  A recent expansion has been the opening of a general practice clinic, broadening their response to the need for more holistic health care in an area where many cannot afford it. At EVC we provide free medical and surgical care to women suffering vesicovaginal and rectovaginal fistulas.  Most often these problems come about as a result of prolonged obstructed labor without timely intervention (like cesarean section).

The pressure of the baby in the mother's pelvis causes destruction of tissues, leaving holes between the bladder and the birth canal, the rectum and birth canal, or both. Women with fistulas are therefore completely incontinent of urine, feces, or both, until a surgical repair can be provided.

EVC offers a welcoming, safe, and friendly environment where women are cared for physically, mentally, and spiritually through medical care, psychosocial and spiritual counseling, and vocational training opportunities.

Our center is the highest volume fistula center in West Africa, and one of the highest in the world, and is recognized as a center of excellence in fistula care and training of fistula surgeons. [/expand]
